The football field at South Charleston High School will play host to the Black Eagles' home games for the first time this season. SC, which has historically played its home games at Oakes Field in South Charleston, will play its first home game on campus Sept. 6 against St. Albans.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. - South Charleston High School Principal Mike Arbogast confirmed Tuesday that the Black Eagles will open their home schedule Sept. 6 against St. Albans at their field on campus.

"The city has been instrumental in making this happen," Arbogast said. "We met with the mayor this afternoon and we've made it official: we are leaving Oakes Field."

The school announced its plan to move home games to its on-campus site behind the high school just before the start of the 2012 regular season. At that time, however, considerable challenges to that plan were obvious in the lack of facilities around that field, which prior to this month had been used as the Eagles' practice field.

The majority of the needs have been met by members of the SC community, including several private business owners.

"Steve Doty from Peerless Block & Brick has donated a lot of time and work into making it happen, and Doug Skaff has supplied a lot of the doors and roofing we've needed," Arbogast said.

The joint production of their contributions will be named the Doty/Skaff Facilities Building, Arbogast said.

Play clocks, bathroom stalls, water and plumbing have been installed, and the grass on the field has even gained the attention of University of Kentucky horticulturalist David Williams, a St. Albans native.

"He said that there's a few spots where crab grass is coming through, but we've got herbicide to take care of that and by next season it should be gorgeous," Arbogast said.

"I'm not going to quit on this thing. I'm trying to fulfill a dream I had of playing on our home sight."

Medium-to-long-range goals include the construction of a field house behind the visiting bleachers. For 2013, teams will dress in locker rooms in the high school.
